
The Mars rover has landed and NASA is celebrating. The craft named Curiosity reached the Red Planet’s surface shortly after 10 p.m. our time last night. The one-ton, six-wheeled, nuclear-powered device is touted as the most sophisticated rover ever built. The goal of Curiosity’s two-year mission is to determine whether Mars ever had the capacity to sustain life.
The FBI and local authorities are working to try and make sense of a deadly shooting at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee. Seven people were killed, including the shooter, and three people were wounded, including the officer who shot the gunman.
San Bernardino County public health officials are confirming that over a half-dozen birds have tested positive for West Nile Virus. Six chickens collected from sentinel flocks in Colton, Rialto and Upland were carrying the virus as well as a dead crow found in San Bernardino. They’re the first birds to test positive in the county this year.

A Palm Desert veterinarian is accused of leaving his dog in his locked car for several hours, causing it to die. The eight-year-old German shepherd was found Saturday morning in the vehicle outside Desert Veterinary Specialists. Sheriff’s deputies say it died of suspected heat exhaustion. Its owner, veterinary surgeon Douglas James Huber, was arrested on a misdemeanor animal endangerment charge.
