
Hot and humid weather will round out the final days of September. A high-pressure ridge is expected to bring mostly clear skies and warm temperatures to the Inland Empire through next Wednesday. Triple-digit temperatures are expected Sunday, Monday and Tuesday.
The Los Angeles area is gearing up for what’s being called “Carmageddon Two.” The second weekend-long closure of the 405 is scheduled to take place tonight through the early Monday. The freeway will be closed for ten miles in both directions through the Sepulveda Pass so that crews can continue the demolition of the Mulholland bridge.
Riverside County homicide detectives have taken over the case of an elderly woman who was found gravely injured near her French Valley home. The incident happened last Friday while 68-year-old Wanda McGlover was on the phone with her daughter while on her morning walk. The daughter, who did not want to be identified, says their conversation ended abruptly when she heard her mother scream before someone grabbed her phone and hung it up. A coroner’s report concluded McGlover was likely the victim of a hit-and-run, but her family believes she was approached, brutally attacked and then murdered.
Passengers will be able to board SBx rapid transit buses in about a year-and-a-half. Construction on the bus line marked its one-year anniversary this week. The 16-mile route will connect northern San Bernardino with downtown and Loma Linda. The project is set to be complete in early 2014.
Latinos will eventually be the majority in the Inland Empire. That’s according to a seminar in San Bernardino yesterday that focused on the economic and cultural impact of the Latino community. However, the region is not quite ready to help the younger generation enter into leadership positions, according to IE Economic Partnership CEO Paul Granillo. He says the Latino population is not represented well at the highest levels of government. Among the regions Latinos, only about eight-percent have earned a bachelor’s degree or higher.
The filmmaker behind a controversial anti-Islam film is being held without bail. Nakoula Basseley Nakoula was arrested yesterday in LA for allegedly violating the terms of his probation for a 2010 check fraud conviction.
The NFL’s regular refs are back. Regular refs called last night’s game between the Baltimore Ravens and Cleveland Browns. The officials received a standing ovation as they came out onto the field one night after working out a new labor agreement with the league. The Ravens held off the Browns, 23-16.
New baby makes three for Reese Witherspoon. Reese gave birth to her third child, a son named Tennessee James Toth, yesterday. This is her first child with second husband Jim Toth. She has two other children from a previous marriage.
