President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney face each other tonight in Denver for the first of three presidential debates. The nationally-broadcast event starts at 6, and runs for 90 minutes. Tonight’s debate will focus on domestic issues and will be moderated by Jim Lehrer.

A tragic accident in Riverside yesterday afternoon…police say an 18 month old boy was killed by a family members SUV when he crawled underneath a tire outside a condo on Grambling Way.

Cooler weather is on tap for the Inland Empire.  Temperatures will peak in the mid-to-low-90s in Riverside and San Bernardino today before slipping into the 80s tomorrow, Friday and Saturday.  The mercury hit the triple-digits Monday and Tuesday, marking some of the hottest weather of the season.  Riverside topped out at 100 yesterday and San Bernardino at 102.

UC Riverside has gained preliminary accreditation for its planned four-year medical school. Yesterday’s announcement paves the way for UCR to begin recruiting students for its opening class in August.

Construction on the 91 Freeway expansion is set to break ground next fall.  The one-point-three-billion-dollar project will include an extra lane in each direction between Riverside and Orange County, improved access to the freeway and express lanes from State Route 241 in Yorba Linda to Pierce Street in Riverside.  The Riverside County Transportation Commission is working to acquire dozens of properties along the route.  The project is expected to wrap up by 2017.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention says the percentage of teens who drink and drive is down more than half since 1991. Even so, the agency also says almost a million teens did it last year.

The auto industry was a buyer’s market last month. Americans bought nearly 15-million vehicles in September, the biggest total since early 2008.
