The land that sits beneath the 100-year-old cross atop Mount Rubidoux in Riverside is up for sale. The City Council voted late last night to auction off a small piece of land beneath the cross to avoid a potential lawsuit. Americans United for Separation of Church and State say the historic landmark sends a message that the city favors the Christian religion. A public auction is planned for March with a minimum bid of ten-thousand dollars.

Eisenhower High School basketball coach Steve Johnson remains hospitalized in fair condition after being shot during an attempted robbery Monday night. Johnson told police that he stopped at San Bernardino’s Seccombe Lake Park Monday night to use the public restroom when he says three men tried to rob him and he was shot. No arrests have been made.

The man accused of causing a head-on wreck in Redlands last week that killed three people could face charges. Police say 20-year-old Sargis Basambekyan was behind the wheel of a van that crossed into oncoming traffic on North Orange Street, colliding with another van and killing three of its passengers. They say six of the eight people in Basambekyan’s van were not wearing seatbelts.

A state lawmaker is introducing a bill to ban all single-use plastic bags in California grocery stores. Under the bill, grocery stores could no longer provide plastic bags to customers starting in 2015, but they could offer paper bags. The following summer, only reusable plastic bags would be provided.

The voice actor who played Charlie Brown in the classic TV specials “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown” was arrested yesterday on a stalking charge. 56 year old Peter Robbins is expected in a San Diego court today.

Harvard geneticist George Church wants to set the record straight. It’s been all over the news that the professor was looking for an adventurous surrogate mom to give birth to a Neanderthal clone. Church, says that’s not at all true. He blames reporters from Britain’s Daily Mail who misinterpreted and sensationalized comments he made to a German magazine.
