One in three Americans will struggle to get through another day of bitterly cold, staggeringly snowy, miserable weather today. The Nor’easter hammering 22 states is affecting well over 100-million people, particularly those who are trying to travel. The storm has canceled at least a thousand flights today, including dozens out of LAX.
General Mills is no longer using genetically modified ingredients in Cheerios. The company says it’s changing the sources of ingredients such as the sugar in its popular cereal. The oats in Cheerios have never contained any GMOs.
Police in Riverside County are announcing hundreds of arrests following a three-week campaign against drinking and driving. 725 people were arrested on suspicion of DUI during the sting that ended yesterday. That’s compared to 758 arrests during the same period last year. Similar campaigns are planned throughout the county on Super Bowl Sunday next month, and again on St. Patrick’s Day in March.
Lake Gregory in the San Bernardino mountains is getting a makeover. The County has a three year contract with a private company to spruce up the lake and surrounding property. The San Moritz lodge will be upgraded to attract weddings and other events, the swimming lagoon will get some new attractions and pens to raise and release trout will be built.
A California lawmaker is resurrecting plans to tax soda pop. Democratic State Senator Bill Monning put the penny-per-ounce soda tax proposal on hold last legislative session. But now is rushing it onto the floor for a vote by end January.
The California Supreme Court has cleared the way for an undocumented alien to become a lawyer. Sergio Garcia of Chico passed the bar exam but was not allowed to practice law because he is not in the country legally. The state supreme court ruled that he could become a lawyer but the ruling appears to conflict with Federal law.
At least one member of U2 will be on hand to accept the group’s latest honor. “The Desert Sun” newspaper says Bono has sent confirmation that he’ll be attending the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards Gala, taking place Saturday.
