We’ll never forget her as Lieutenant Uhura on ‘Star Trek.’ Nichelle Nichols who made history as one of the first black women to play a major role on prime time tv in the 1960s, passed away on Saturday (07.30.) Nichols will also forever be remembered for one of the first interracial kisses on tv which she shared with William Shatner. When Nichols contemplated leaving the show after one season, Martin Luther King Jr. told her not to. She said, ‘Dr. King, I wish I could be out there marching with you.’ He said, ‘… No, you don’t understand. You are marching. You are reflecting what we are fighting for.’ Nichols was 89.
