We all remember Star Search—one of the original talent competition shows that helped launch the careers of Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Usher, and even a young comedian named Dave Chappelle.
The show first premiered in 1983, hosted by the unmistakable voice of Ed McMahon, and ran for 12 seasons. Now, Star Search is getting another revival—its second attempt—and this time, Netflix is backing the entire production. Hopefully, that means a better shot at success. You might remember the first revival in 2003, hosted by Arsenio Hall, which, unfortunately, didn’t last long. But with Netflix’s version, I’m hopeful. It feels like the right time for a fresh take on this beloved show, which was a trailblazer for American IdolAmerica’s Got Talent, and The Voice.
Netflix says the show will stream live twice a week, with contestants competing in categories like dance, singing, comedy—and even some special ones just for the kids. Everyone will be competing for viewers’ votes to stay in the competition.
As of now, there’s no confirmed air date or host, but I’m hopeful they’ll do it right—honoring the original while adding something fresh. They’re currently looking for new talent, so if you’re interested in showcasing yours, you can apply here.
